Indoor Plants are Nature’s Air Filter

When it comes to quality of life we can sometimes take things for granted: flowers in the spring, sunshine in the summer, a blanket of white snow in the winter, and clean air all year long. But, did you know that the average home is nearly air tight? A positive when you want to retain heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, but its not exactly conducive to a breath of fresh air. Today’s energy efficient homes often hold in more than heat, they are also keeping in many airborne toxins. A great way to improve the air quality inside your home is by adding houseplants!

It is commonly known that plants absorb Carbon Dioxide and produce Oxygen through photosynthesis. However, it is lesser known that houseplants can also remove harmful elements such as trichloroethylene, benzene, and formaldehyde from the air. A study conducted by NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America provided a list of several common houseplants that were the most effective for indoor air purification. The top 18 include:

English Ivy (Hedera helix)
Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Golden pothos or Devil's ivy (Scindapsus aures or Epipremnum aureum)
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum 'Mauna Loa')
Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema modestum)
• Bamboo palm or reed palm (Chamaedorea sefritzii)
Snake plant or mother-in-law's tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata 'Laurentii')
Heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron oxycardium, syn. Philodendron cordatum)
Selloum philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum, syn. Philodendron selloum)
Elephant ear philodendron (Philodendron domesticum)
Red-edged dracaena (Dracaena marginata)
Cornstalk dracaena (Dracaena fragans 'Massangeana')
Janet Craig dracaena (Dracaena deremensis 'Janet Craig')
Warneck dracaena (Dracaena deremensis 'Warneckii')
Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina)
Gerbera Daisy or Barberton daisy (Gerbera jamesonii)
Pot Mum or Florist's Chrysanthemum (Chrysantheium morifolium)
